Epidemiologist Siobhan Sutcliffe, PhD, ScM, MHS, began her career in the Division of Public Health Sciences with strong mentoring support for achieving her research goal: to study the incidence and possible means to control prostate cancer.

In weekly meetings, Division Chief Graham Colditz, MD, DrPH, encouraged her to pursue new avenues of research such as the rarely studied area of early-life risk factors for prostate cancer, which resulted in a paper in Nature Reviews Cancer. Her work with urology Division Chief Gerald Andriole, MD, who also became a mentor, led to a prestigious NIH U01 grant and other funding and broadened her research focus to include other urologic conditions.

“Dr. Andriole invited me to join the twice-yearly Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening Trial meetings while the PLCO trial was ongoing,” says Sutcliffe. “My relationship with PLCO has led to three grants.”
