While still at the beginning of his career, fifth-year resident Dominic Sanford, MD, MPHS, already distinguishes himself as a product of the department’s culture of leadership. One of the department’s two Walter F. Ballinger Administrative Chief Residents this year, Sanford recently received one of the highest scores in the nation on the American Board of Surgery’s written board certification exam, placing him in the top 1 percent in the nation. In 2012, he was part of a two-person team that won the American College of Surgeons Surgical Jeopardy contest. The following year, he was one of the top three finalists in the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons’ Top Gun Competition, which tests laparoscopic skills. During residency, he earned a master of population health sciences degree and plans to specialize in minimally invasive hepatobiliary surgery with a focus in pancreatic and liver cancer. Sanford is operating with resident Emily Onufer, MD, and attending physician L. Michael Brunt, MD.
